We are offering an unusually fine violin by the famous German workshop of Ernst Heinrich Roth. This instrument, dated 1945, is a rare copy of the work of Leopold Widhalm, a highly influential German maker who worked in Nuremberg during the 18th century. The violin, in excellent condition, is the highest level of the Roth violins. Its authenticity is confirmed by a recent certificate by Wilhelm Roth, the current head of the company.
The instrument was specially chosen for the current owner by the head of Scherl & Roth, the US distributor for Roth, in 1971 when she was eleven years old. She was a child prodigy who later went on to study with Jascha Heifetz, and has had a long and distinguished career. Although she has since gone on to violins by famous Italian and French makers, she has treasured and meticulously maintained this violin, which launched her career.
The violin is distinguished by a responsive, refined, and open sound, with a particularly rich & appealing clarity in its upper range.
